How is the English qualification structured

Reading

The reading exam is 1 hour, however, it is usually sat alongside the writing exam in a 2 hour time slot. They can, if necessary, be sat at separate times. In the exam, students will need to answer questions, both written and multiple choice, about a source text.


Writing

Same as the reading, the writing exam is 1 hour long, however, it is usually sat alongside the writing exam in a 2 hour time slot. They can, however, be sat at separate times if the learner requires it. In the exam, students will need to write a piece of text, with a specific purpose, in response to a prompt.


SLC (Speaking, Listening & Communication)

The SLC lasts up to 2 hours and are sat at 10am Monday to Friday. A week prior to their assessment date, students will receive a topic on which they must make a 4 to 7 minute presentation to give in their exam. After they have done their presentation, there will be time for the others learners to ask questions and engage in a discussions about the various presentations.

The SLC lasts 1 to 2 hours and are sat at 12:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In the run up to their assessment date, students will receive a topic on which they must make brief notes. The learners will discuss the topic amongst one another and will be shown discussion prompts to talk about.
